How the Cardiff Bay Waterbus Timetable Worked

The archived timetable page describes a simple shuttle pattern. This page explains the main points as they were in 2014, and the information may no longer apply.

Season and demand

In winter the service ran to a timetable at weekends, depending on demand and weather. In the week, the boat could be busy with school groups, so casual passengers were advised to check availability first.

Frequency and journey time

Boats ran approximately every 40 minutes in each direction between the Barrage at Penarth and the Pier Head in Cardiff Bay near Mermaid Quay. Each crossing lasted about 15 minutes. The departures at the two ends of the route were staggered, so that the boats passed one another mid-route.

Optional stops

The crew could also stop at the children’s playground and at the Doctor Who landing if passengers asked. A popular idea was to take a picnic to the playground and catch a later boat back.

Commentary and tickets

Each skipper offered a short, personal commentary on the sights. Tickets were bought on board and no pre-booking was needed.
